Preschoolers with ADHD are often given medication right after diagnosis, against medical guidelines that recommend starting with behavioral therapy. Limited access to therapy and physician pressures drive early prescribing, despite risks and reduced effectiveness in young children.

Iron overload: The hidden culprit behind early Alzheimer’s in Down syndrome
USC researchers have uncovered a hidden driver behind the early and severe onset of Alzheimer's in people with Down syndrome: iron overload in the brain. Their study revealed that individuals with both conditions had twice the iron levels and far more oxidative damage than others. The culprit appears to be ferroptosis, an iron-triggered cell death mechanism, which is especially damaging in sensitive brain regions.

Protecting Your Trademark — Is it always good for business?
You may have seen the headlines over the summer that lululemon sued Costco for trademark infringement because Costco has been selling clothing that bears a striking resemblance to lululemon clothing. Your first thought might have been to head to Costco to pick up your own wardrobe of the “dupes,” as the kids call them. But your second thought—my second thought anyway—might have been, “Does lululemon have a real trademark to protect? Doesn’t all athleisure look similar?...

Beet juice secretly helps older adults lower blood pressure in just two weeks
Drinking nitrate-rich beetroot juice lowered blood pressure in older adults by reshaping their oral microbiome, according to researchers at the University of Exeter. The study found that beneficial bacteria increased while harmful ones decreased, leading to better conversion of dietary nitrates into nitric oxide—a molecule vital for vascular health.

'Barcodes' written into our DNA reveal how blood ages
A study explains how age reshapes the blood system. In both humans and mice, a few stem cells out-compete their neighbors and gradually take over blood production. The loss of diversity results in a blood system that has a preference for producing myeloid cells, immune cells linked to chronic inflammation which underlies many different diseases. Using a new technique, researchers tracked naturally-occurring 'barcodes' in blood cells which can lead to new strategies that spot early warning signs of unhealthy aging long before symptoms appear, helping prevent cancer or heart disease. The technique also opens the door to studying the viability of rejuvenation therapies in humans, efforts which have traditionally been the focus of animal research.

Hidden brain signal reveals Alzheimer’s years before symptoms
A new study has revealed that TSPO, a protein linked to brain inflammation, rises long before Alzheimer’s symptoms appear. Researchers tracked the protein in genetically engineered mice and confirmed the results in human brain tissue from Colombian families with a known Alzheimer’s mutation. They found unusually high levels of TSPO in microglia clustered around plaques, particularly in women. This discovery not only deepens our understanding of the disease but also sparks the possibility of using TSPO to detect and treat Alzheimer’s far earlier than ever before.

Hidden Alzheimer’s warning signs found in Parkinson’s patients without dementia
Researchers in Japan discovered that Parkinson’s patients diagnosed in their 80s are far more likely to show signs of amyloid buildup, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s, even without dementia symptoms. The study compared younger and older patients, finding that older individuals had three times the rate of amyloid positivity. Surprisingly, Parkinson’s patients overall showed lower amyloid buildup than healthy people their age, suggesting that Parkinson’s might change the way Alzheimer’s-related processes unfold in the brain.

A new cancer vaccine just wiped out tumors in mice
A breakthrough mRNA cancer vaccine has shown the ability to supercharge the effects of immunotherapy in mice, sparking hope for a universal “off-the-shelf” treatment that could fight multiple cancers. Unlike traditional vaccines designed to target specific tumor proteins, this approach simply revs up the immune system as if it were fighting a virus. The results were dramatic—when paired with checkpoint inhibitors, tumors shrank, and in some cases, the vaccine alone wiped them out.

Alcohol’s hidden shortcut lets gut bacteria wreck the liver
Alcohol-associated liver disease is becoming a massive health and economic burden, but researchers at UC San Diego may have uncovered a new way forward. They discovered that chronic alcohol use blocks a crucial protein that normally helps keep gut bacteria from leaking into the liver, worsening damage. Restoring this protein’s function, using drugs already in development, could not only reduce liver disease but also have implications for treating alcohol addiction itself.

Deafness reversed: Single injection brings hearing back within weeks
A cutting-edge gene therapy has significantly restored hearing in children and adults with congenital deafness, showing dramatic results just one month after a single injection. Researchers used a virus to deliver a healthy copy of the OTOF gene into the inner ear, improving auditory function across all ten participants in the study. The therapy worked best in young children but still benefited adults, with one 7-year-old girl regaining almost full hearing. Even more exciting: this is just the start, as scientists now aim to target other genes that cause more common forms of deafness.

Brain fat, not just plaques, may be the hidden driver of Alzheimer’s
For decades, scientists believed Alzheimer’s was driven mainly by sticky protein plaques and tangles in the brain. Now Purdue researchers have revealed a hidden culprit: fat. They found that brain immune cells can become clogged with fat, leaving them too weak to fight off disease. By clearing out this fat and restoring the cells’ defenses, researchers may have uncovered an entirely new way to combat Alzheimer’s — shifting the focus from plaques alone to how the brain handles fat.

Why the flu turns deadly for older adults, and how scientists found the cause
Researchers have uncovered why older adults are more vulnerable to severe flu. The culprit is a protein called ApoD, which rises with age and disrupts the body’s ability to fight infection. This protein damages lung tissue and weakens immune defenses, leading to worse outcomes. By pinpointing ApoD as the driver, scientists now see a promising new treatment target that could protect elderly patients from life-threatening influenza and dramatically cut flu-related deaths.

Three-person DNA IVF stops inherited disease—eight healthy babies born in UK first
In a groundbreaking UK first, eight healthy babies have been born using an IVF technique that includes DNA from three people—two parents and a female donor. The process, known as pronuclear transfer, was designed to prevent the inheritance of devastating mitochondrial diseases passed down through the mother’s DNA. The early results are highly promising: all the babies are developing normally, and the disease-causing mutations are undetectable or present at levels too low to cause harm. For families once haunted by genetic risk, this science offers more than treatment—it offers transformation.
