Osteoarthritis disproportionally affects postmenopausal women, and a biological mechanism for why this occurs has been largely unkown, hindering development of effective treatments. That is in part because of a lack of reliable animal models of menopause. In a new study researchers used a mouse model of menopause to uncover a novel mechanism for OA onset in older females and test possible interventions.
